Description
Phytoestrogens are estrogenic compounds found in a variety of plants such as soy, alfalfa, dong quai, licorice, etc. Numerous studies have confirmed the fact that women who consume foods rich in phytoestrogens seem to suffer very few symptoms associated with menopause.

In 1992, The Lancelet published a study finding women in a small Japanese village eating a traditional Japanese diet of low-fat high-soy content excreted 100-1,000 times more endogenous estrogens in their urine than American women.

Interestingly,, phytoestrogens also have been shown to act as modulators. When estrogen levels are low, they help supplement estrogen in the body. When estrogen levels are high, phytoestrogens will find or compete for estrogenic receptor sites which will cause a decrease in estrogenic effects. This balancing action gives phytoestrogens a chemoprotecting action. Many studies have confirmed high intake of phytoestrogenic substances may reduce the risk of breast cancer.
