Description
In 1988, the FDA approved the first medication for the application to the scalp that has ever been scientifically proven to grow human hair: Minoxidil 2% solution. This medication is marketed by the Upjohn Company under the trade name RogaineŽ for the treatment of male pattern baldness and female pattern thinning.

In the late 1970's, the Upjohn Company's drug Minoxidil, which was being used as an internal medication to treat severe high blood pressure, was accidentally found to have the ability to reverse or slow down the balding process. If administered directly to a "bald spot" at the crown of the head that still had "peach fuzz" hairs remaining, a 2% solution of Minoxidil was shown to be able to start the hairs growing longer and becoming thicker again in 59% of both men and women aged 18-49. Those who did not observe regrowth may notice a decline in "fall out" and further thinning.

Topical Minoxidil requires a minimum of four months continuous use to determine the degree of effectiveness. Many doctors recommend 3-4 applications daily for improved results (consult with your physician) and twice daily for maintenance.

Over 90% of hair thinning is caused by dihydrotestosterone acting on genetically sensitive follicle receptors.
