Facts About DHEA

Perhaps the breakthrough of the century, the hormone DHEA is produced by the adrenal glands, and generates a very wide variety of health and longevity benefits. A large and very rapidly expanding body of scientific evidence, indicates that the level of DHEA in a person’s blood can foretell the future regarding degenerative diseases, memory disorders, and perhaps aging itself.

DHEA levels drop with age; the older you are, the less DHEA you have. The drop is approximately 50% between age 20 to 40. At age 80, you produce only 10 to 20% of DHEA (Orentreich, 1984).

Studies have shown a direct relationship between blood levels of DHEA and the inhibition of many diseases. If you have high levels of DHEA, you are far less likely to: develop arteriosclerosis (and suffer from cardiovascular disease), develop malignant tumors (and generate cancer), suffer a decline in mental function.

During July, 1995, the national news media proclaimed the stunning results of more current DHEA research. The results were announced at a major meeting in Washington, D.C. on DHEA and Aging, under the auspices of The New York Academy of Sciences. Older men participating in these studies showed dramatic improvement in their ratio of lean mass to body fat. Other benefits displayed included: enhanced immune system, more youthful skin texture, increased energy and cognitive function, enhanced libido (dramatically for women), less stress, more restful sleep.

World-class aging athletes and body-builders are known to far exceed the usual dosage of 50 to 100 mg per day. Unlike steroids and HGH (human growth hormone), the benefits are considerable, with virtually no known side effects. As we age, the stress of high intensity exercise reduces testosterone and increases cortisol levels -- tilting us into a catabolic state. During our late teens and early twenties, the opposite occurs. DHEA appears to reverse this aging problem, both, with men and women, enabling us to recover quickly and derive greater benefit from the exercise.
